“I know how hard it can be for anyone to break into the beauty industry. There are three markets you can really tap into:
Freelance Artist
To work as a freelance artist you will need to get an education at a recognized beauty institute. From there, you will need to develop a portfolio and learn how to sell your skills to potential clients. Some states may also require specific licensing to work as a freelance makeup artist.
A freelance career can be rewarding, but it is a difficult industry to break into. Many do free work to build their reputation before they can make a career out of it.
Department Store Consultant
While you will get to work with some great products, the only application you learn will be related to the products you sell, you will not learn makeup practices that can be applied universally. You will work from 25- 40 hours a week, often standing behind a counter. Payment terms vary by company, but most cosmetics companies pay their department store consultants an hourly wage plus 4-13% commission (with higher commission rates like 13% being rare). There is often a high-pressure environment to make your quotas, which can prove frustrating if return customers purchase their products at another counter, or from a different rep.
Entertainment / Celebrity Makeup Artist
Becoming a makeup artist in the entertainment industry is NOT easy. Most freelancers attain this type of job after years of hard work and networking- they must live and breathe fashion and have a strong passion to work in print, TV and film. Long apprentice hours (usually for free) are needed before a career as a celebrity makeup artist can really take flight. Another fact of this industry is that it’s not always what you know by but who you know in this business-- you must always remain in the in crowd of all A- list socialites.
My journey to becoming a Celebrity Fitness Makeup Artist was not easy, I had to break down a lot of barriers and make many sacrifices personally and financially. It’s my goal to make it easier for those who have the passion for makeup and beauty to break into the industry, especially during the fragile economic conditions we are living in.
I want to give to those that have a passion for beauty a career to be proud of. Working with the Shades of Monet® Partnership program you will enjoy:
